Born on 11 January 1964 in Naihati, he was educated in commerce, completing his post-graduation from Rishi Bankim Chandra Evening College under the University of Calcutta. He early on engaged with youth mobilization, labor union welfare, and community theater arts. He made his assembly debut in 2011, riding the historic change of guard in West Bengal, and retained the Naihati seat comfortably in 2016 and 2021. Known as an effective administrator, he handled crucial flood management and canal infrastructure projects as the state’s Irrigation Minister.
