Mala Roy’s enduring political career is built on deep grassroots city administration and urban crisis management in South Kolkata. Born on 10 July 1957 in Kolkata, she completed her higher education at Ashutosh College under the University of Calcutta and early on dedicated herself to urban civic rights organizing. She was first elected as a city councilor in 1995 and built a reputation for accessibility, managing municipal water networks, and executing slum-area sanitation overhauls. Her structural grip on South Kolkata led to her appointment as the Chairperson of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. In 2019, she entered the Lok Sabha by winning the Kolkata Dakshin seat—historically held by Mamata Banerjee herself. Known for her focus on civic drainage infrastructure and public urban safety, she transitioned to the Nationalist Citizen Party of India (NCPI) during the mid-2026 legislative split.
