Mian Altaf Ahmad Larvi is a veteran political leader from Jammu and Kashmir, currently representing the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency in the Lok Sabha. Born in 1957 in Baba Nagri, Kangan, he belongs to a family of great spiritual and political influence. He is the younger son of the late Mian Bashir Ahmed Larvi, a revered Sufi leader and politician, and the grandson of the saint Mian Nizam ud Din, the founder of the Gujjar-Jat Conference. Mian Altaf’s family holds a significant following among the Gujjar, Bakarwal, and Pahari communities, with millions of devotees seeking his blessings at their spiritual center. As a law graduate from the University of Kashmir, he seamlessly transitioned from his spiritual heritage into a highly successful political career. He has been elected five times as a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from the Kangan constituency, maintaining an unbroken winning streak for his family since 1952. His political longevity is attributed to his deep connection with his constituents and his ability to address the developmental needs of the marginalized nomadic communities. He has served as a Cabinet Minister twice, overseeing portfolios such as Forestry, Ecology, and Environment under the administrations of both Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Mian Altaf won the Anantnag-Rajouri seat, reinforcing his position as a stalwart of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC). His leadership is defined by his commitment to preserving the cultural and social rights of the Pahari and Gujjar communities while navigating the complexities of regional governance. Respected across party lines for his integrity and calm demeanor, he continues to be a unifying figure who bridges the gap between traditional spiritual values and contemporary democratic governance, ensuring the voice of his people is heard in the national parliament.
