Prasun Banerjee’s life illustrates a highly successful transition from elite international athletics to long-term national legislative governance. Born on 6 April 1955 in Howrah, he is the younger brother of the legendary football icon and coach P.K. Banerjee. Immersed in sports early on, Prasun rose to become one of India’s finest midfielders, captaining the national squad at the 1982 Asian Games and playing extensively for Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. His contributions were honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1979. Following retirement, he entered public service under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, making history in 2013 as the first professional international footballer elected to the Lok Sabha. Representing the industrial hub of Howrah, his legislative work highlights youth sports development grants, city municipal water logistics, and worker welfare. In June 2026, he shifted political alignments, signing the document to merge with the NCPI.
