Born on 10 June 1952 in Ghubaya, Ferozepur, he grew up in a traditional farming family and early on dedicated his efforts to trade union and community councils, emerging as the undisputed leader of the highly influential Rai Sikh demographic. He made his formal state legislative debut in the 1990s, winning the Jalalabad Assembly seat multiple times. He successfully transitioned to national politics in 2009, winning consecutive terms in the Lok Sabha. Known for his intense field visibility along the international border, his legislative tenure is highlighted by securing massive central budgets for border fencing crop compensation, upgrading rural drainage lines, and establishing technical schools.
