Abu Taher Khan’s long political journey in central West Bengal’s Murshidabad district transitions between extensive state-level legislative experience and national representation. Born on 23 November 1964 in Naoda, he grew up in a prominent agrarian family and early on engaged with the developmental challenges of rural Bengal. He began his political career with the Indian National Congress, winning the Naoda Vidhan Sabha seat in 2001 and successfully retaining it across the 2006, 2011, and 2016 elections. Known as an influential regional organiser, he switched allegiance to the All India Trinamool Congress in 2019 to contest the parliamentary polls, winning a decisive mandate. Over his tenure in the Lok Sabha, he has focused on border area security cooperation, agricultural rehabilitation following crop loss, and rural highway expansions. In mid-2026, he was a key figure in a highly publicized 20-MP legislative realignment that shifted parliamentary affiliations from the Trinamool Congress to the Nationalist Citizen Party of India (NCPI).
