Haji Nurul Islam’s lifelong political career in the border regions of North 24 Parganas was marked by immense grassroots popularity, deep structural community work, and significant rural influence. Born on 11 November 1963 in Bahera, Duttapukur, he grew up in a modest agrarian family and dedicated his early youth to local panchayat and social justice organizing. He joined the Trinamool Congress at its absolute inception in January 1998, quickly rising to become an indispensable regional organizer in the Sundarbans border belt. In 2009, he successfully led the party’s breakthrough in Basirhat, winning his debut parliamentary race. He later pivoted to state legislative duties, strengthening local infrastructure as the MLA for Haroa across two terms. In 2024, amid intense political polarization in the region, the party leadership placed their trust in his unifying local status, resulting in a landslide victory. His final public weeks were dedicated to expanding rural drainage channels, local health clinics, and minor minority educational grants until his untimely demise in late 2024.
