Dr. Ricky Syngkon’s entry into national legislation represents a historic structural shift in Meghalaya’s political landscape, driven by high-level academic critique and alternative regional mobilization. Born on 4 January 1972 in Shillong, he early on dedicated himself to financial science, earning his Master of Commerce and subsequent Ph.D. from North-Eastern Hill University. As a premier Professor of Commerce at NEHU, he mentored generations of students while publishing extensive research on northeastern border economics and tribal employment blocks. Driven by a desire to challenge systemic governance lapses, he became a founding architecture of the Voice of the People Party (VPP). In the 2024 elections, he executed an articulate, issue-based campaign that unseated a three-term veteran incumbent by a massive margin of over 3.71 lakh votes. In parliament, his presence is highlighted by expert contributions on macroeconomic policy, tribal land equity, and demanding official Eighth Schedule recognition for the Khasi language.
